Cochlear Implants

A Cochlear (Coke-lee-ear) Implant is a medical device that allows people with certain types of deafness to hear. The device turns sound into electronic impulses that are used to directly stimulate the auditory nerve. This bypasses the ear drum, bones of the inner ear, and the hair cells in the cochlea.

The system includes a microphone, processor, coil, implant electronics, and electrodes. The microphone picks up the sound. The processor translates the sound into electronic signals. The coil transmitts the signals through the skull to the implant electronics (which are in the head). The implant electronics drive the electrodes that are wrapped around the auditory nerve.

Our daughter has a Nucleus 24 on her right side an a Freedom on her left side. Both are from Cochlear Corp.
